You secured Laith’s first operation which was successful. Let’s make the second and final operation a success so he can walk!

AMOUNT NEEDED   7,000 JOD

Laith is on his way to recovering, walking, and returning to his normal life after 5 years of using a wheelchair. He now needs a second operation that costs 7,000 JOD which includes the surgery in which the tissues and bones will be reconstructed with leg lengthening. It also includes all medical procedures (as explained below), such as the surgeon's and anesthesiologist's fees, as well as the costs of staying in the hospital for two to three days.

Laith STORY

We’re all looking forward to Laith regaining his ability to be able to stand and walk after five-years of using a wheelchair. The first operation was on 28/11/2022 on Laith’s left leg which was a huge success allowing an overall improvement of 80% to Laith’s foot condition. This second operation will complete the remaining 20% which will allow Laith to walk again. 

Here are the details of Laith’s previous first operation for his left leg: the abscess (inflammation) was cleaned and a large part of the dead bone with a length of 10 cm was removed from the shinbone (tibia), and a bone graft was placed with antibiotics. An external bone fixator (ExFix) was also placed to lengthen the bones and straighten the deformities of the limbs. Lastly, he is on another round of antibiotics until the appointment of his second operation. 

The time has come for the second and final part of the operation which will be in mid-March of 2023, and this will be divided into two phases. 

Phase 1 - clean bone and lengthen the leg

The orthopedic surgeon will first remove the external fixator (ExFix), clean the inflamed bone, and then put an external device to lengthen the bones (using the Ilizarov technique) for a period of three months.

During the placement of the Ilizarov device for three months, Laith has to increase one cm of the device on a daily basis so that new bone is formed by 10 cm in place of the dead bone that was removed in the previous operation.

Phase 2 - fix foot drop

After these three months, the second phase of the operation will be performed. As a first step, the ExFix device will be removed. Laith has foot drop, which means difficulty lifting the front part of the foot - where the foot might drag on the ground when you walk. If this phase 1 is successful, Laith will undergo another surgery to implant tendons in his foot which should resolve his foot drop. 

We hope the above is conducted easily and with success. If so, Laith will need to rest for a good while - and then start physiotherapy to help him walk again after five years.
