HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Sabri is a one-year-old baby who suffers from two openings and stiffness in the heart as well as a rare hereditary disease called PKU (Phenylketonuria), where he can’t digest the amino acid phenylalanine. As a result, Sabri needs special food, including special milk, special flour, and special foods generally, and he can't eat anything that contains protein. Unfortunately, his family’s insurance doesn't cover the expensive alternative food items that would help him to thrive. With your help, his family can secure his special dietary needs every month and manage his condition.

SABRI's STORY

Sabri has a rare hereditary disease called Phenylketonuria (PKU), which he was diagnosed with immediately after birth. PKU is a congenital error of metabolism that results in decreased metabolism of the amino acid phenylalanine. If left untreated, PKU can lead to intellectual disability, seizures, behavioral problems, and mental disorders. It may also result in a musty smell and lighter skin.

Sabri’s mom also struggles with health conditions of her own, and cares for his sister who has a heart condition and two openings and stiffness in the heart as well.

A lot of Sabri’s dietary requirements are not covered by their insurance. Yet, they do receive government support to cover all of his special milk needs. Sabri’s dad is a daily-paid construction worker who earns around 250 JOD on a monthly basis. The family is in debt due to a previously failed business attempt, and most of the dad’s current income is paid towards closing the debt and providing the family’s basic necessities. Therefore, Sabri is at the risk of not being provided the right amount and kind of nutritional items, which can have major health ramifications in the future.
