Case description

Najwa is 17 years old with four older siblings and a younger one in school. She has a mild mental disability known as Down's syndrome.

In 2009, Najwa enrolled as a student at the Bunayat Centre for Special Education, but was obligated to leave, or graduate from, the center since no one could sponsor her tuition fees.

Najwa has been taught various academic disciplines such as Arabic, mathematics, and general culture. She also learned a series of independence skills, including personal hygiene, personal care, as well as environmental care. She loves working and participating in group activities, such as sports and social gatherings. Thanks to the continuous training she receives, Najwa’s stellar performance has been widely acknowledged at the Bunayat Center.

Bunayat Center offers three educational sections based on age:

  • Preschool: 6 to 11 years old
  • School: 12 to 17 years old
  • Vocational: 18 to 30 years old

There are no grades for the above mentioned sections. Rather, the students continue to learn new skills and activities according to each student’s own pace / learning curve.

Najwa’s 66-year-old father is currently unemployed due to old age and sickness, and her mother is a housewife who tends to family needs. Moreover, her father has previously suffered from three strokes and a slipped disk. The entire family of eight live in a simple house, which is rented. Their financial situation is quite dire, as the only income they receive is around JD 250 monthly from different individual donations.

Najwa needs our support so that she may continue to excel in her academic and extracurricular life. After all, educating individuals with Down syndrome can vastly improve their lifespan and overall well-being. Therefore, we aim to receive donations of JD 1,450 to cover the second semester fees (from February to August), which amount to JD 250 for transportation and JD 1,200 for education.
