SADEEN’s STORY

Sadeen, a 22-year-old who has four siblings and two parents, is the oldest child in the family. While her father has a regular job, his income prevents him from enrolling Sadeen in the Medicine major she has always dreamt of and strived for.

Her academic excellence, ambition and drive won him over; he tries to support her and provide as much as possible for her university bills and needs.

SADEEN’s STORY, as she tells it

“I worked so hard and put a lot of effort into my Tawjeehi (General High School Certificate) exams in 2019. After each exam, a revision of my answers with teachers, I was put forward for an expected GPA of 98%. When results came out, I was shocked to learn my GPA was 96.1%.

For as long as I can remember, I had wanted to study Medicine. But, my GPA meant that I was unable to apply for university through the standard process; instead, I had to use the fast-track registration process (universities allow lower GPAs for higher tuition fees), which would have cost me 200 JOD per each Credit Hour, which is beyond anything my father could afford.

I temporarily got around this obstacle by enrolling in Pharmacy, a major with a shared core of required courses and key subjects for first-year students. After completing my first year in Pharmacy, I still had a calling for Medicine, at which I decided to switch majors. All of this coincided with the COVID pandemic outbreak, which made it a year that was both incredibly worrisome and stressful.

I reset my Tawjeehi examinations for biology and arabic with a full lockdown and a jam-packed university exam schedule, earning full marks, raising my GPA to 98.2, and securing a spot in the Faculty of Medicine at Al-Yarmouk University.

Even though I had to relocate into a dorm and move far away from my home and family, I am very adamant about realizing my childhood’s dream. I completed two years and a half as a med student and I am attending the second semester of my third year. A student loan I applied to previously, will pay for this semester, the summer semester, and the first semester of the fourth year after that. Nevertheless, it only covers the tuition fees with no book allowance, leaving me to sort out the cost of the expensive textbooks and other necessities.

I take pursuing my dream very seriously, and it requires a significant amount of both physical and mental effort. Furthermore, I have my eyes set on Oncology for specialization.

And I forgot to say! I want to be a successful physician to make my parents proud!”
