Case description

Haytham is 23 years old and the youngest of six other siblings. He suffers from a mild mental disability classified as Down's syndrome.

Since 2012, Haytham has been a student at Bunayat Centre for Special Education. He has been trained in the ceramic unit of the Vocational Rehabilitation Department, most notably excelling in pottery, printing specific designs, and coloring ceramic pieces. Haytham was also trained in building his independence skills, including personal hygiene, personal care as well as environmental care. Haitham is distinguished by his love of working and participating in group activities, such as sports and social gatherings. Thanks to the continuous training he receives, Haytham’s great performance has been widely recognized at the Bunayat Center.

Bunayat Center offers three educational sections based on age:

  • Preschool: 6 to 11 years old
  • School: 12 to 17 years old
  • Vocational: 18 to 30 years old

There are no grades for the above mentioned sections. Rather, the students continue to learn new skills and activities according to each student’s own pace / learning curve.

Haytham’s father is 68 years old, a diabetic with high blood pressure and myocardial weakness, while Hayhtam’s mother tends to the household and family needs. They own a small house in a simple neighborhood and only receive a total monthly income of JD 250. This financial support comes from Haytham’s siblings who work as an Arabic language teacher, a salesman at a mobile shop, two carpenters, and an electrician.

The Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) supports poor families by paying their handicapped children’s educational fees based on a signed agreement with Bunayat Center. From 2015-2019, Haytham was afforded this opportunity. Yet, once the MoSD ceased this financial support, he was obliged to leave, or graduate from, Bunayat Center.

Nevertheless, Haytham needs our support so that he may continue to be productive. After all, educating individuals with Down syndrome can vastly improve their lifespan and overall well-being.  Therefore, we are hoping to receive donations of JD 1,450 to cover the second semester fees (from February to August), which amount to JD 250 for transportation and JD 1,200 for education.
