ALMA’S STORY
Alma, 3 years old, is the youngest of her three siblings. Her father is a day laborer with a fluctuating income.
When Alma was 8 months old, her mother noticed that her daughter was not engaging with her or making the sounds that kids her age do. These milestones, which children acquire through interactions with others around them, are important as they help children develop what are known as pre-language skills.
Alma didn’t start to gurgle until she was five months old. By the time she turned six months, her mother would try to sit her up, but struggling, Alma would always lean to one side instead.
Following extensive medical examinations, it was revealed that Alma was experiencing severe developmental delays. The evaluation results indicated a delay in her language skills, motor development, and simplistic vocabulary due to a genetic condition. She could neither sit unsupported nor stand or walk independently.
Alma requires intensive physical therapy, functional rehabilitation, and speech therapy sessions, specifically 3 weekly sessions for at least a year to keep up with her chronological age and before she turns six.
